From rock to electronic to house, the city’s vibrant music scene will have something for everyone

Whenever World Music Day comes around, Kolkata always comes alive with excitement. This year, it falls on Friday, on June 21, and the city is already in a celebratory mode, with hotspots hosting different kinds of events. So, if you also are in the mood to celebrate this day, here are some fun gigs to check out.

Red Alert at Roxy, The Park

Do you like high-energy performances? Teri Miko will be making her way to Roxy at The Park for a World Music Day special. Known for her electrifying sets, she will bring her unique blend of bass-heavy tracks to the stage, promising an unforgettable night of both familiar and new music. Teri Miko being a well-known face in the city, we’re sure the night will be a memorable one with loud, energetic beats.

World Mayhem at Skinny Mo’s Jazz Club 

Celebrate World Music Day with a cosmic journey through jazz as The Bodhisattwa Trio, well-known in the international jazz scene, presents their album Frontier. The event also features maverick saxophone player Maarten Visser from the Netherlands. With Bodhisattwa Ghosh on guitars, Premjit on drums, Shonai on keyboards and synth bass and Maarten Visser on saxophone, this collaboration promises to break barriers and create a mind-bending musical experience.

The celebration continues on June 22 with Jeepers, a dynamic trio at the forefront of modern R&B, funk, soul and pop music. Dedicated to crafting groovy tunes, they infuse rich harmonies from the old school with contemporary content, creating a unique sonic experience that resonates with audiences across all ages. On June 23, the owner of the jazz pub, Munir Mohanty, will host a brunch and vinyl listening session where a diverse selection of records from his personal collection will be played. He will also share fascinating stories behind them.

Techno Tram at Phoenix, The Astor

Are you a techno or progressive house fan? Well, you’re in luck! The legendary James Harcourt is making his way to Phoenix in Kolkata all the way from the UK. The artiste has been active for almost two decades, with musicians worldwide still playing his music in their sets today. Rudra, a local talent with national presence, will open for Harcourt with a progressive house set to get the audience charged up.

Groove ‘n’ Move at Skai

The city-based band, The Yellow Taxi, is known for their energetic live covers of well-known songs. What sets them apart is the dynamic performances by Russel Siraj and Hamza Khan, who serenade their audience with both English and Hindi music, while also weaving in their originals like Junoon. The duo is set to bring this energy to Skai on World Music Day as you get a view of the skyline while enjoying the open air.

Future Sounds at Park Street SOCIAL

There’s not just a celebration for World Music Day but also the launch of a new IP. 8 Bit-Culprit and SOCIAL will present ‘Not A Circus’, featuring artiste Pangaea, who will be performing in the city for the first time.

Pangaea, aka Kevin McAuley, produces and DJs electronic music that synthesises familiar UK dance music cultures with futuristic elements, characterised by relentless rhythmic exploration, experimental sounds and an immediate dancefloor impact. His assertive, grooving tracks on Hessle Audio and his own label, Hadal, blend technical precision with musicality.

Sahai will start the night with groovy tunes, followed by 8 Bit himself, who will bring a vibe of acid house and electronic disco.
