Upcycled, sustainable and fashionable — define city-based brand Denim Darzi’s unique collection of outfits. Their interesting range includes outfits for men, women and kids. Started around the pandemic in 2020 by entrepreneur Rupali Mukherjee, the brand was born out of sheer love for denims and with an aim to repurpose old denim wear and industry-waste denim meaningfully. “My husband and I both love experimental clothing and we keep experimenting with new styles. During the lockdown we found there were 25 odd pairs of denims lying at home. Donating wasn’t an option because of the trouser fitting. There was so much denim at home and Durga Puja was around the corner, so we decided to do denim patchwork on outfits for the entire family and everyone liked it. That’s how we started Denim Darzi,” said Rupali.
Denim Darzi’s wide collection includes Indian, western and Indo-western styles in various silhouettes from a sari to a dhoti. “We upcycle post-consumer discarded denims and textile industry-waste denim. We infuse the collected denim with fabric waste from shops and the textile industry to design our collections. Our outfits are a concoction of waste denim and other fabrics like satin, cotton, linen, jamdani,” added Rupali. Speaking on the production process, she said, “We have tied up with a tailoring unit. We do hand sketches and send them. The idea was to work sustainably and not have a big production unit. We did not want to go into bulk production. It is done based on the collection we get to source from textile industry. We operate only through online platforms.”
