A freelance designer for over a decade, boasting the likes of Sabyasachi on her CV as one of the design houses she has worked with, Indu Kapil opens her first store on Shakespeare Sarani under the brand name House of Indus. “The name is very close to my name, and it is also inspired by the Indus Valley Civilisation, the oldest civilisation in the world that was very rich in trading and craftsmanship,” said Indu as she introduced her brand to us.
Hailing from Uttarakhand, Indu’s artist mom’s embroidery work and the beauty of the hillside got her interested in fashion and motivated her to take up fine arts, later following it up with a degree from NIFT. Travelling across the country introduced her to the history and heritage of India and various craft forms. “Every part is rich in its own way. I used to interact with the artists directly and learned that they do not benefit as much as those selling their products. So, they are not willing to pass down their craft. This is our initiative to uplift the community of artisans creating hand-crafted wonders,” she told t2.
