Barbie, the doll that hit the shelves of toy shops and fairs way back in 1959, has always been synonymous with high fashion and glam looks. With a new Barbie doll being released every now and then, there has been an evolution in her style, too. The movies too have never failed to transport us to the fantasy land. As the much-awaited Barbie by Warner Bros., starring Margot Robbie, awaits release this summer (July 21), the Greta Gerwig film’s poster is already a sensation on social media with popular names channelling Barbie vibes.
‘Barbiecore’ too started trending almost a couple of years back with many popular fashion brands making pink's hottest shade in the family their colour. Starting with Jacquemus’ all-pink pop-up in Paris and their fall/winter 2021/2022 show in Paris to Valentino’s Paris Fashion Week showcase last year, head-to-toe pink on the ramp and on the celebrated, has made pink a growing sartorial trend. 'Barbiecore', inspired by this doll from the house of Mattel, is all about donning pink from head to toe. While hot pink is the most popular pick from the palette, the shades vary from light pink to fuchsia.
The Telegraph creates a lookbook following the trend, with Bibriti Chatterjee and Jessica Aaron modelling the looks for us and getting into the ‘Barbie’ mood, complemented by Soba Sassy’s pink interiors.
Bibriti’s power dressing in the flamingo pink co-ord set is all about keeping it sassy with a touch of feminine charm. The alpha crepe set from Anuja Banthia comprises a box-sleeve blazer-style crop top and a pair of trousers. Embroidery and sequin as design detailing on the sleeves add to the feminine charm.
Bibriti sports a smart and stylish look in the fuchsia pink jumpsuit from Anuja Banthia. The summerperfect sleeveless style has the look of a two-piece with pocket detailing that makes the alpha crepe outfit chic.
Jessica’s super sexy sundowner-party style spells glam with a dose of sequin shine. The hot pink silk skirt and shirt from 431-88 by Shweta Kapur (available at Bombaim) is paired with a sequin blouse– an apt style for the beach bachelorette or a destination wedding cocktail evening. Soba Sassy’s cherry blossom decor by the window adds to the mood of the look.
Jessica’s easy-breezy brunch style is all about channelling comfort while sporting trends. The magenta one-shoulder knotted silk gown by Anuk from the Bombaim x PR Sri Lanka Edit, is accessorised with the corset belt, matching ‘Barbiecore’ with the corset trend for a stylish brunch look.
“Barbiecore’ is about embracing girly, vibrant, vivid hues of pink and making it a style statement. It is all about adding a spark to everyday mundane life. So, while styling this particular shoot all I thought was to incorporate everything pink, glittery and hyper-feminine,” says Isha Thakkar, stylist.
“Barbie’s feminine looks with glam make-up and elaborate hairstyles were the make-up and hair styling inspiration for this lookbook. Keeping in mind the ‘Barbiecore’ trend, we went for bold shades of pink on the eyes and lips, the dramatic winged liner looks, rosy cheeks and doll-like lashes with pony and fringe hairstyles. Barbie is a timeless beauty inspiration and being on trend makes it even more notable for feminine and glam look inspirations,” says Bhaskar Biswas, make-up artist
