When it’s time to prepare for the festive season or for a special occasion, a big concern for most women is how they are going to fit all their hair tools in the suitcase. The solution for many is the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler. Delivered neatly in a hard blue rubber and velvet case, the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler comes with about seven components, a 30mm barrel, 40mm barrel, firm smoothing brush, soft smoothing brush, round voluminising brush, Coanda smoothing dryer and a filter. What does all this mean? We asked Kavya Krishnan Nair, design engineer, personal care, Dyson.

What kind of improvements are we looking at on the motor?

Our patented Dyson digital motor V9 continues to power the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler. Created in-house by a team of motor engineers, it is Dyson’s smallest, lightest and most advanced digital motor. Partnered with Dyson’s styling barrels, this motor is what enables the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler to style with air, without extreme heat.

Since 1999, Dyson has invested over £350 million in researching and developing the Dyson digital motor. Spurred by James Dyson’s dissatisfaction with the power and efficiency of motor technology, 15 years ago, a team of engineers set out to develop a more efficient and powerful alternative. Today our motor technology sits at the heart of our latest machines, allowing us to achieve high performance.

In order to provide the high flow rate needed by our haircare products, it needs to spin at extremely high speeds — over 110,000 times per minute. It is this high speed and the subsequent high pressure that is generated inside the product, which drives the Coanda effect used by the attachments and creates the magic that you see every time you use the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler.

What are some of the improvements on the new over the old model?

The Dyson Airwrap multi-styler is re-engineered for faster, easier, and superior styling — without extreme heat.

The advancements in the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler build on the success of its predecessor, through relentless research, user trials and advancements in computational fluid dynamics. The result: an entirely new, dual-purpose Coanda smoothing dryer, direction change barrels for faster and easier curling, and re-engineered brush attachments for more precise shaping.

The Coanda smoothing dryer combines two attachments in one. Replacing the pre-styling dryer attachment, the Coanda smoothing dryer dries hair from wet to damp in pre-style mode or hides flyaways in a single pass in smoothing mode, with the flick of a switch.

The next-generation styling barrels now include a rotating cool tip to change the direction of the airflow. This means you can create both clockwise and anticlockwise curls using a single attachment making it faster and easier to achieve curls and waves. This means owners can now style a full head of hair creating clockwise and anticlockwise waves without the need to switch attachments mid-style.

Do the accessories allow retro-fitting, like using Dyson accessories one may already have?

The attachments are fully compatible with previous Dyson Airwrap multi-styler machines. If you are an owner and would like to upgrade your current Airwrap multi-styler, you can purchase a “Complete” or “Complete” long attachment upgrade kit (or standalone attachments) on dyson.in and in our Demo stores.

Readers may want to know whether there will be hair damage over time?

The Dyson Airwrap multi-styler uses the combination of air and heat to create voluminous curls and waves with no extreme heat damage. The barrel also automatically attracts wraps and curls hair using air, and it does not require any manual twist or wind. The Dyson Airwrap multi-styler also has intelligent heat control, helping to ensure hair isn’t exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 40 times a second and transmits this data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented double-stacked heating element.

What kind of maintenance should users look at to extend the life of the product?

We recommend carrying out regular maintenance on your machine, to stop hair products and dust from blocking the airflow. This keeps it working at its best, and it’s quick and easy.

Cleaning your attachments: Simply wipe the surfaces of your barrels and pre-styling dryer with a soft, damp cloth, and carefully pull any hairs out of the brushes.

Cleaning the filter: Slide the filter cleaning brush over the cable and onto the filter cage. Using a rotating action, clean the filter cage thoroughly. Pull the filter cage downwards, onto the cable. Gently open the filter cage and slide it off the cable. Wash the filter cage under a warm, running tap. Shake the filter cage to remove the majority of the excess water, then leave it to dry well naturally.
