The most noteworthy pieces in Billie Eilish’s mall goth-meets-hypebeast wardrobe have been sourced from an underground streetwear label named Skoot. The Seoul-based label has been behind many of Billie’s concert wardrobes, off-duty wear, award show picks and Billie also famously wore a cream graffiti jumper by Skoot for her music video for Therefore I Am.

“Skoot is really sick and does all these weird custom pieces you’d never expect. Dude, there are so many underground-ish brands that are coming up through Instagram," Billie said in an interview recently.

In the last year, Billie has pivoted to high fashion and has opted for labels like Burberry, Oscar de la Renta and Gucci for A-lister events. However, Skoot is very much on the Grammy winner’s radar since she just wore anime shorts from the streetwear label for a show and her stylist Samantha Burkhart often takes to Instagram to share details about Billie's newest Skoot looks.

Skoot, interestingly does not sell via Instagram but through their website and their ready-to-buy pieces are modestly priced; there are manga-themed outerwear co-ords, anti-fit jumpers, baggy acid denim, layered double pants and even graphic printed masks ranging between $50 to $300. Skoot caters to international shipping and charges $20 for express shipping.

The streetwear label was founded in 2016 by artists Koh V and MLMA and Skoot's anime-themed outerwear and deconstructed co-ords are all the rage with pop icons like Dua Lipa, Grimes and Rosalia.

“I started following Billie really early on. Then, she followed me back and started wearing our stuff. One of the first pieces she wore was a fire-print hoodie that I made,” MLMA revealed recently in an interview.

Anime remains a big part of the label’s appeal, Koh and MLMA also work with the artist problem6oy for some of their limited-edition ready-to-wear manga-inspired prints. Last year Rosalia threw fans in a frenzy after she wore a Sailor Moon co-ord set in New York and carried a matching 3D i-Phone sticker. BTS frontman Jungkook is also a fan of Skoot’s anime-forward aesthetic and the pair of skull-printed black shirts he wore in a behind-the-scenes footage in 2020 sold out within days.

MLMA recently revealed in an interview that animation anchors a crucial part of his creative vision.

“I grew up around animation culture because I’m from Korea. Reading comic books was really big, and those kinds of images really inspire me. I like to twist those images in my own way,” the artist shared.
