A garden with blooms that might invite a chirping visitor in the morning, or fresh herbs and vegetables on your plate of food are delights that most urban dwellers seek out these days.

The last two years have seen a spike in people’s interest in having their own urban gardens. Born out of sheer boredom and a growing concern for one’s own health, both mental and physical, gardening is quickly catching on. A green thumb, however, is not something that comes about naturally.

So if you are a gardening enthusiast and plant parent, or are looking to start your own little natural haven, these YouTube channels will help you get your green on.

Gardening is my Passion

On YouTube since 2017, this channel is helmed by Dr. Surja Prakash Agarwal who works in Vidyanagar College, West Bengal. As the name suggests, Dr. Agarwal’s informative videos are driven by his love and passion for gardening. He takes viewers on tours of his home garden and the ones on the college campus that, judging by the videos, he’s equally invested in. From growing flowers to cultivating mushrooms, this channel has information about it all.

There are video tours of some of his favourite nurseries in Kolkata, and useful accounts for DIY fertilisers, maintaining a terrace garden, and season-specific produce or flowers.

Urban Gardening

This is one of the most low-maintenance gardening tutorial channels you will come across. Most of the videos are centred around growing vegetables and berries in something as basic and available as a plastic bottle. There are also tutorials on growing more ornamental plants including cacti and handy tips on making your own cement pots for your urban garden.

Mohit Kumar Singh Rajput is an engineer and business administrator with a passion for gardening. He has over 20 years of experience in the field, having picked up the hobby at a young age. From the looks of his videos, he spends every spare moment he has caring for plants and learning everything he could about horticulture.

Green Fingers

Another homegrown (no pun intended) channel, this one has something for every gardening enthusiast, whether they have a large outdoor space or are stuck in little urban homes. Sangeetha, the YouTuber behind the enterprise, makes informative videos on plant care, propagation, and sourcing.

Whether you are a gardening novice or an experienced horticulturist, you are sure to find something of interest. The videos are beautifully shot and provide clear instructions that are easy to follow. In addition, the host is always on hand to offer helpful tips and advice. She even has DIY tutorials for indoor plant arrangements.

Mini Urban Farm

Veronica, the woman behind this YouTube channel, grows her own vegetables in balmy Florida without any fancy set-up or acres of land. She does it inside a gated community — the dream of every urbanite who wants their produce less than a few yards away.

In her informative videos, she’ll show you how to make vermicompost, plant and grow your own vegetables, and even raise your livestock (she has a brood of hens and a rooster), along with tips on the use of natural pesticides like neem oil. She also does video tours of her own garden and life, tips on budgeted wedding planning and it definitely helps that her videos are engineered to soothe after a long day in the city.
