"Loi Krathong is a symbol of good luck, and it relates to Diwali, it’s the festival of lights and people. It mostly falls in November. It also relates to Buddhism. It’s also about worshipping the river. The floating basket is used as a way to seek good blessing and float away all the negativity. Baan Thai has kept things very authentic and that is very important for our cuisine as well as culture. Apart from the taste that we present, the storytelling of the evolution and of the cuisine and colour of our spread, and its regional variety are all showcased here," said Piyapan Atipatya, acting consul general of Thailand in Calcutta (third from right). Loi Krathong is a popular festival celebrated across Thailand and other South East Asian countries on the day of the full moon of the 12th month in the Thai lunar calendar. The festival is marked by a ritual of floating a leaf basket with candles and lights as a marker of positivity, fertility, growth and getting rid of all negativity. Baan Thai, the speciality restaurant at The Oberoi Grand, celebrates this festival with a special menu beginning today.

“Loi Krathong is an annual festival celebrated in Thailand with great vigour and zeal in November full moon to mark the end of the rainy season. This festival signifies the purification ceremony to enlighten the mind and pay respect to the water Goddess. During this festival, the floating Krathong symbolises a person willingly letting go of all negativity. Any celebration is incomplete without indulgent gastronomical delights. At Baan Thai, we bring you an assortment of hand-picked dishes like Tao Hoo Phik Dam (tofu in black pepper sauce), Pla Samros (stir-fried fish in sweet chilli sauce), Kaeng ka Pai (Jungle Curry), Phad Phak ki Mao (flat rice noodles with hot basil) and many more to relish and invite you to be a part of our celebration,” said Klae Somsuay, speciality chef, The Oberoi Grand.

t2 gets you a first taste.

Kiew Koong Saab: This is a hearty and tangy, spicy prawn wonton soup with bok choy and peanut. A great soup for the upcoming days with a nip in the air.

Tao Hoo Phik Dam: This appetiser of stir-fried silken tofu with garlic and black pepper sauce was crisp on the outside and silky soft on the inside. The sauce has a great balance of hot and salty flavours.

Kaeng Pa Kai: A favourite dish from the villages of northern Thailand, this is a simple yet loaded jungle curry that has chicken and vegetables in a simple ginger and pepper broth. It goes very well with jasmine rice.

Pla Samros: Chunks of Calcutta bhetki are fried and coated in a sweet-and-sour sauce. The sauce has spicy undertones that really hit once you're done eating. Fresh greens further balance out the flavours.
