Is Paneer Butter Masala really about to be the priciest thing on the menu, as per the new GST rules? Now that consumers have to pay 5% GST on pre-packaged and labelled food items such as paneer, curd, and masala, Twitter is worried about the cost of the Sunday night mainstay — Paneer Butter Masala.

However, some Twitter users were quick to point out that hotels may be buying unbranded paneer, butter, and masalas in bulk, in which case these GST rates may not apply, at least on paper. Moreover, now that hotels and restaurants cannot levy the service charge on food bills, prices of certain items may go up anyway.

Nevertheless, Twitter did what it does best with a barrage of Paneer Butter Masala memes and hashtags. Many believe that MP Shashi Tharoor, who tweeted a GST-related WhatsApp forward, started this meme-fest.

Some netizens evoked the cringe-worthy ‘khujli roti’ scene from 3 Idiots as well.

The creativity is off the charts!

This might be a good time to start making paneer at home, like this one user.
