People may like new buildings but old buildings have their own charm. So also with restaurants.

Six Indian restaurants have been recognised among the ‘100 Most Legendary Restaurants in the World’ by Taste Atlas, an experiential travel online guide for traditional food. Three of these restaurants even made it into the Top 10: Paragon in Kozhikode at #5, Tunday Kababi in Lucknow at #6, and Peter Cat at #10. Other notable Indian eateries on the list include Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba in Murthal at #16, Mavalli Tiffin Rooms in Bengaluru at #32, and Karim's in Delhi at #84.

Peter Cat is the only restaurant from Kolkata to make it to this list, repeating its triumph from the previous year’s list. Established in 1975, the restaurant was opened by restaurateur Nitin Kothari on Park Street, after the address, previously used for auctioning confiscated airport goods, became available when the Customs House moved to Strand Road.

The most iconic dish from Peter Cat is its Chelo Kebab, which combines Persian and Indian influences. The plate consists of minced meat formed into elongated shapes, skewered, and grilled, with a mound of fragrant, buttery rice and a side of seasoned grilled vegetables. The Sizzlers, introduced in the late-1980s, are also pop picks. During festive months and on weekends, a queue outside the restaurant is inevitable, even today.

In 2021, the family extended its brand portfolio beyond Peter Cat and Mocambo with the launch of Peter Hu? at 25B Park Street, just a stone’s throw away from Mocambo.
