There’s nothing in the world that some fried, sweet dough packed with flavoured cream can’t cure! Originally conceived in ancient Rome, the donut (or doughnut) has become one of the world’s favourite desserts. With almost every bakery in the city acing the classic flavours while developing unique and new ones, donuts have been in Kolkatans’ minds and mouths for the past few years. So, on Donut Day, My Kolkata brings you a list of some of the cafes, bakeries and patisseries making the best donuts in the city…
Little Pleasures Patisserie
The Nutella donut is the bestseller at Little Pleasures
This cafe has been serving some of Kolkata’s most delectable donuts at their addresses in Hungerford Street, Sarat Bose Road and Salt Lake. The founder, Shripriya Gupta Seth attributes their unique taste to freshness. “We don’t make the standard donuts with a hole, but artisanal ones that are found in Europe and referred to as ‘Berliners’. They are made fresh every morning, and we are sold out well before the end of the day,” she says. Their donuts come in four flavours — Lemon Curd, Lotus Biscoff, Raspberry and Nutella — with the latter being their bestseller.
That Donut Shop
That Donut Shop has introduced a Creme Brulee variant, which has a hard outer crust, with a soft creamy filling
One of the newest entrants on this list, this donut-centric eatery opened its first outlet on Camac Street in November 2022. While they serve innovative flavours like Choco Fudge, New York Cheesecake and Red Velvet, one of their most popular flavours is the Creme Brulee, which is a huge hit with kids. They have also introduced savoury donuts in flavours like Chilli Cheese Burst and Creamy Chicken. “Seeing the response, we have decided to open our second outlet sometime this month near Lord’s More,” said Antara Chakraborty, co-founder of the brand.
Dariole
The Mango Glaze Doughnut at Dariole is a seasonal delicacy, packing the punch of Himsagar
This bakery has taken over Kolkata’s sweet imagination in a short span of time, setting up 10 outlets across the city. They are especially known for their seasonal delicacies, where they incorporate natural flavours into the donuts. Their current bestseller is the Mango Glaze Doughnut, which imbibes the flavour of Bengal’s favourite Himsagar mango.
Flurys
The Chocolate Doughnut has been a permanent fixture of the Flurys menu
Excellence is often achieved when you choose one thing, and do it right. It is this drive that has made Flurys a legacy. The confectionary chain, originating from Park Street, makes just one donut, and does complete justice to it. The next time you are crossing this iconic eatery, make sure you drop by for their Chocolate Doughnut.
King’s Bakery
While King’s Bakery serves the (left) classic ring donuts, their bestsellers are the (right) twisted doughnuts with icing sugar
In Kolkata, the K-Pop craze has percolated down to Korean food, with King’s Bakery becoming one of Kolkata’s most beloved brands in recent times, sprouting branches in New Town, Park Circus, Hindustan Park and Jodhpur Park. They make two types of donuts — the classic ring ones with a hole in the middle, and the twisted variant with icing sugar — which is their bestseller. If you prefer conventional flavours, you can also choose from glazed, strawberry, chocolate and white chocolate!
Scarlet
Scarlet’s speciality is the Doughnut Box, which brings together 6 unique cream-filled flavours in one pack
This patisserie located inside Aauris Hotel is popular for their boutique donuts and brioches, which come in 10 tasty flavours. “While we have classics like blueberry and jam, people particularly love our mango donuts, which contain the puree of alphonso mangoes. Our bestsellers are the Nutella and Biscoff ones,” said founder Mannvi Saini.
Boma Asian Bakery
This bakery in the Park Street area has redefined Asian food for much of Kolkata’s youth. Their doughnuts are particularly to die for, with five types of fillings — custard, jam, cream cheese, chocolate and milk cream, with the last two being extremely popular.
