Down the Rabbit Hole: Bangkok’s mixologists take over Kolkata’s Mehico

There’s fun people, drama and flair, and at the top of that list are the positive vibes of Fongbeer and Depp. The two mixologists from Rabbit Hole Bangkok (#31 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2020) made their way to Mehico for a bar takeover on the night of May 25. Sponsored by Patron, the four cocktails on offer stirred up tastes and flavours from Bangkok. Each cocktail hit the right spot in its own way, and if that didn’t do it, Fongbeer and Depp were down to do shots… with you! The duo didn’t just serve up these delicious cocktails, they brought the vibe, hyped everyone up and made sure the party was turnt up.

Sippy sip: Fun with four

Taco, one of the cocktails on the menu, was made with Grey Goose and tasted refreshing with cucumber, cilantro, agave and lime. It also had a dash of Tabasco, for an extra kick. But the cutest part of the drink was the tiny taco placed as garnish.

The Low Calories cocktail was for those who wanted to enjoy themselves minus the guilt. The drink brought together Patron Silver Tequila, stevia, green pea water, bitter gourd, lemongrass and grape vinegar. While fizzy on the tongue, it left a refreshing effect and the glass came with a nutritional sticker counting the calories…or the lack of them!

There was one for the sorbet lovers as well. The slushy-style Melon was a My Kolkata favourite, where the ice was drowned in Bacardi Carta Blanca, Thai melon, coconut jelly, orgeat syrup, and pandan which made it a fragrant, lime and melon soda. Yet, each spoon had a sinful boozy kick which you kept wanting more.

Quince was the final drink on the menu — a mix of Bombay Sapphire, pear, cacao white liqueur, aromatised wine and Poire Eau De Vie (Poire Williams is the name for eau de vie (colourless, unsweetened fruit brandy).

Fun and games

Amidst all the fun, Mehico’s head mixologist, Manoj Singh Rawat, and Bacardi Trade Ambassador, Ashitosh Narayanan joined the duo behind the bar. It was Ashitosh’s collaboration with Mehico that turned this night into a huge success. “Bringing the best international bars to Kolkata has always been a passion, and working with Mehico has been particularly rewarding. When the collab opportunity to host Rabbit Hole arose, it was an instant ‘Yes!’. Depp and Fongbeer took this takeover to another level by showcasing why they are one of Asia’s best bars. My goal with these takeovers and activities in Kolkata is to elevate the bar scene and contribute to the local bar community,” said Ashitosh.
