After satiating the sweet tooth of mishti-loving Kolkata for over four decades, the iconic sweet shop has opened its first store in Mumbai at Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai. So probashi Bangalis will no longer have to wait for a trip to Kolkata or for friends or family coming from the City of Joy to enjoy the succulent pantua or crunchy khaja from Banchharam’s.

Started in 1974 by Banchharam Ghosh, the first Banchharam’s outlet was at Tiretta Bazaar. With time, the shop gained popularity for the quality and taste of its sweets.

Banchharam’s is now run by his three sons. The shop has 12 outlets in the city now. In Bengaluru, they have four outlets. And now, on November 10, the shop opened its first outlet in Navi Mumbai. Banchharam’s has come to be known for its ghee-e bhaja pantua, shukno khaja and syrupy jibe goja — Satyajit Ray was a fan of the last. The brand has, over the years, experiments with sweets and come up with the Mihidana Tart, Baked Rosogolla, Baked Sandesh Pie, Mihidana Gulab Jamun Slice Cake and more besides the traditional Bengali mishti like rosogolla and a variety of sandesh.

“Banchharam started with traditional sweets. People have loved us and we have taken all our favourites to Mumbai. We have taken traditional mishtis like jibhe goja, Banglar pantua, sandesh, kachagolla, rosogolla, mishti doi, mihidana, bonde and more. Similarly our modern items like Gulab Jamun Slice Cake and Mihidana Tart will be available too. The prices will be slightly higher than that in Kolkata since the cost of manufacturing is also higher,” said Subhojit Ghosh, son of Banchharam Ghosh.

Banchharam’s has set up a production unit in Mumbai. “We have brought the karigars from Bengal. Some core mishtis will come from Bengal so that the Mumbaikars get the same taste as in Bengal. In future, we plan to open branches in different parts of Mumbai. We want to reign in the hearts of people of Mumbai with sweets of Bengal. Customers will be able to enjoy authentic sweets and savouries of Bengal at home when our products become widely available on major online platforms too,” Ghosh said.
