Flavours of Japan is the all-new Japanese food menu at the Asian bistro Pa Pa Ya, one of the city’s favourites for Asian food. The new menu includes a range of starters, small plates, noodles, ramen, mains and desserts, all inspired by the cuisine. “For the last few months our regular guests have been speaking about Japanese food, so we listened and gave them the best we could,” said Debraj Bose, director, Pa Pa Ya Kolkata.
Here’s getting you a taste.
Agedashi Tofu: This dish pleasantly surprised us. Silken tofu fillets were coated in starch and deep fried. These were then served on a bed of a tangy sauce made using miso sauce.
Sushi lovers rejoice, for the choice here is endless. From the hot Spicy Avocado Maki Roll, to Maguro Nigiri and Kani Sashimi, seafood lovers have plenty to choose from. For vegetarians, other options such as Smoked Avocado Nigiri, Crispy Vegetable Maki Dehydrated Spinach and Pelangi Roll are also great.
Ebi Tempura: These were juicy prawns that had a generous coating of a tempura batter and were fried till bright golden and crispy. You won’t be able to stop at just one. The sprinkle of matcha salt adds an umami goodness.
Chirashi Sushi: This is a novel concept of a deconstructed sushi in a bowl. The vegetarian variant was an Avocado Chirashi that had seasoned sushi rice topped with avocado, edamame, cherry tomato with wasabi aioli. The non-vegetarian one was a Spicy Salmon Chirashi with sushi rice topped with spicy salmon mixture, tobiko (roe), furikake (seaweed seasoning), wakame (greens) and bubu arare (rice crackers).
Yuzu Cheesecake: This creamy delight packs the goodness of Japanese yuzu, a citrus plant that is generally cultivated in East Asian countries. The creaminess of the cake is balanced by the fresh flavours of the yuzu.
