Eighty students graduated from the English Access Microscholarship Program conducted by the US consulate general in Kolkata and Samaritan Help Mission, Howrah.

The two-year programme for students from economically weak families is held in partnership with the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the US embassy in New Delhi and the public diplomacy section of the US consulate general, Kolkata.

The English Access Microscholarship Program offers communication skills in English language to students from all around the world. Students are given vocational training to better themselves and develop their skills. This, in turn, would help them find better opportunities in higher studies and the job market. The classes at Samaritan Help Mission were instituted by language teaching professionals.

At the graduation ceremony held on February 16, students received certificates of completion of the programme signed by ambassador Elizabeth Jones, the charge d’ affaires for the US Embassy in New Delhi. The certificates were handed over to the students by guest of honour, Juan Clar, assistant public affairs officer and deputy director of the American Center, US consulate general in Kolkata. Also present was Mamoon Akhtar, the founder of Samaritan Help Mission.

‘’Skilling the youth is not only good for them, but also for their families, their communities, for India, and beyond,’’ Clar said.

The US consulate general in Kolkata has been leading making educational resources accessible to students. The main objective of the programme is to make the students self-sufficient leaders in their own fields. Equipped with spoken English skills, digital literacy and critical thinking abilities, each candidate can carry forward the legacy of Indo-American bilateral exchange.
