This June marked a year since Tavern began hosting its karaoke nights every Thursday which became a quick favourite in town because of the fun and inclusivity the space offers. Last week, the chill party spot celebrated the first anniversary of karaoke nights. t2 was the only one there. Glimpses.
“Tavern was this space which had so much character and I wanted to do something more with the place. So Nil (Navonil) and I were discussing what we could do and we decided on karaoke nights because it’s a way for people to express themselves and it has turned out amazing. What started off as a single karaoke event has now turned into a weekly thing. Tavern has become a place where people would not judge you for who you are or how you dress or who is accompanying you. These karaoke nights have given a lot of people the strength to step out and be themselves,” said Anand Puri, owner of Trincas and Tavern.

Navonil Das, co-initiator of Kolkata Pride, said: “When we started karaoke nights last International Pride Month, we thought it would only be a four-week affair but now we are here celebrating a year. So many people dropped in. We try to bring in people from all walks of life and make this place as inclusive as it can be. Now, people of Calcutta know that every Thursday, Tavern is the place and no announcements are required. Anand and the team at Trincas have done an amazing job. So come, sing and be yourself!”
