The central theme of Rotary International throughout its history has pivoted around the need and support for vocational training initiatives to address societal problems and issues. Through such initiatives and programs, they harness the talent and skills of our youth, support those who are vulnerable and often victims of crime as well as empower women from marginalised groups or communities. The Rotary Club of Calcutta, which is also the oldest-running Rotary Club in Mainland Asia, recently held the Vocational Service Excellence Awards for 2023 at Rotary Sadan, Chowringhee. This year’s awards shone the spotlight on the efforts of both individuals and organisations who have made an exemplary contribution to advance the objective of vocational training and give everyone a chance to lead a life with dignity. This year, the club recognised 14 individuals and three organisations who have excelled in their field of work, performing humanitarian service while acting as catalysts for changing and improving the lives of many. The illustrious list included Aparajita Bose from Brave Souls Foundation who helps to rehabilitate acid attack survivors; Prasanta Rakshit for his work with denotified tribes of West Bengal and Jharkhand; Abhishek Dutta for empowering prisoners to learn new skills and earn an honest living; Hamari Muskan organisation working in the red light areas with children and women survivors so they can achieve their fullest potential and live life with dignity and respect, amongst others.
