Suromurchhana US and Suromurchhana Kolkata hosted their annual classical music festival on June 17 at Hazra’s Uttam Mancha, paying a symphonic tribute to the memories of their late gurus and founders, A. Kanan and Vidushi Malabika Kanan. Amit PramanikNext, Namami Karmakar, one of the finest vocalists from the younger generation of the Kirana gharana, performed a soulful rendition of the Shyam Kalyan and Chhayanat ragas. She was accompanied by the soft playing of tabla by Bivash Sanghai and on the harmonium by Jyotirmoy Banerjee. She ended her performance with a bhajan by Tulsi Das
Amit PramanikTanmoy Bose on the tabla and Tejendra Narayan Majumdar on the sarod gelled splendidly to provide another highlight for the evening. The combination of the sarod and the tabla conjured a wistful melody that echoed like the ebb and flow of ocean waves, evoking a bittersweet tapestry of emotions.
Amit PramanikThe evening came to an end with Sanjeev Abyankar from the Mewati gharana presenting a sublime execution of the Gorakh Kalyan raga. His vocals were juxtaposed with a graceful playing of the tabla and the harmonium by Samar Saha and Hiranmay Mitra, respectively. Abhyankar concluded his performance with a delightful adaptation of a bhajan by Kabir in the Kirwani raga, whose lingering aftertaste prompted another standing ovation. “We focus on the multi-cultural aspect of music by bringing together practitioners from diverse art forms to create social harmony through art and culture. Following the footsteps of our gurus, we want to spread the appeal of Indian classical music all over the world,” said Sanjoy Banerjee, founder of Suromurchhana US and Suromurchhana Kolkata and the chief organiser of the programme
