Rotary Clubs are well known for their activities for various charitable causes. From helping to heal the sick and uplift the underprivileged to more universal concerns like environment conservation, Rotarians engage in a variety of social welfare initiatives. Rotary Club of Calcutta Newbies and other Rotary clubs of District 3291 organised Songs Ok Please, a programme of music on December 30 at Kala Kunj auditorium to fund a number of important causes including treatment of cancer-affected children, development of better facilities of a school in Purulia and the maintenance of a garden in New Town. Samir and Madhumita Chatterjee, from Los Angeles, presented a variety of songs including Rabindrasangeet, ghazals and Bollywood numbers. Trijoy Deb, a noted singer from Mumbai, entertained the audience with his energetic renditions of RD Burman compositions. The high point of the evening was when Tollywood actor and guest of honour Shaheb Chattopadhyay performed Tagore song Tomar ghore boshot kore accompanied by Pt Anindya Chatterjee on the tabla. Eminent personalities like sarod player Rajeeb Chakraborty, sitarist Partho Bose, classical vocalist Supriyo Dutta and santoor player Sandip Chatterjee, among others, were present on the occasion. Danseuse and social reformer Alokananda Roy was the chief guest. “We are grateful to all the performers and all the other Rotary clubs who supported the cause and helped us to make the event successful. Songs Ok Please will be the platform to do more such fundraisers for the causes the club is working on,” said executive director of Rotary Club of Calcutta Newbies, Sourish Choudhry.
