Met warns of heavy rain

Friday was consistently cloudy and rainy in phases in Kolkata as a system kept getting stronger over the Bay of Bengal. The forecast was for “heavy to very heavy rain (70mm to 200mm)” on Friday. The forecast was for 24 hours between 8.30am on Friday and 8.30am on Saturday. Till 8.30pm on Friday, the Met office had recorded around 35mm of rain in Alipore.

A Met official said heavy rain was not ruled out in Kolkata on Saturday.

“Generally cloudy sky. Heavy rain/thundershower with one or two intense spells very likely to occur over the next 24 hours,” said the Met forecast for the city, issued around 5.30pm on Friday.

More trains on weekends

Metro Railway will run additional trains on the north-south corridor (Blue Line) between New Garia and Dakshineswar on weekends, starting September 14, to cater to the Puja rush. On September 14 and 21, there will be 234 trains instead of the usual Saturday count of 234. On the two Saturdays after that (September 28 and October 5), there will be 288 trains, said an official. On Sundays, starting September 15 and till October 6, there will be 196 trains instead of the usual 130. "There will be no change in the services on the other operational sections," the official said.

Metro on Sept. 17

Metro Railway will run 262 trains, instead of 288, on the north-south corridor (Blue Line), between New Garia and Dakshineswar, on September 17, the day of Vishwakarma Puja. There will, however, be no change in the timings of the first and last trains, the carrier said.

Sealdah (North) trains cancelled

More than 35 trains in the Sealdah (North) suburban section have been cancelled on Saturday and Sunday because of the upkeep of a railway bridge between Birati and Madhyamgram stations, said a railway official. Railway sources said the maintenance work will be done from 10.30pm on Saturday to 10.30am on Sunday.
