What is your perspective on carrying forward the 200-year-old legacy of Sprungli in the 21st century?
When overseeing a family-owned business with an almost two-century history, the responsibility is immense. However, it’s crucial to avoid being ensnared by legacy. Striking a balance between innovation and honouring tradition is a highly personal endeavour. Fortunately, we navigated the challenges successfully by transforming the company into a global entity while maintaining a niche presence. Our ability to convey our passion has played a pivotal role in translating our vision to others.
What are some of the most iconic creations you have retained over the years and what are some of the new additions?
Globally recognised items such as Luxemburgerli and our renowned Truffes du Jour are distinguished offerings, unparalleled by competitors. The enduring appeal of our traditional truffle cakes has been a speciality for decades. While we cherish our classics, innovation is crucial.
How important are sustainability initiatives to the company?
Our commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in the nearly CO2-neutral machines and ovens we employ, incorporating cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly cooling systems. We invest in technical environmental equipment as our contribution to sustainability.
In regions like Ghana, Ecuador, Madagascar, and Venezuela, where we source our cacao beans, we extend support to farmers. We aim to enhance their quality of life.
Calcutta is also home to several family-run heritage sweet businesses. Have you had a chance to explore any?
This is our inaugural visit to India, and specifically to Calcutta. We have tonight and tomorrow to delve into the diverse experiences the city has to offer, and I am very excited about it.
