The event began with an address by Australian consul-general in Kolkata Hugh Boylan. The diplomat recently oversaw the installation of a tram in the city that brings alive the culture of Melbourne. ‘I wanted to gather together a group of people who would be interested in going to Australia, and sharing its beauty with their near ones. I want more people to experience our culture,’ he said

Throughout the evening, Uthup was flanked by admirers of her work, including (from left) Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee and Richa Sharma. ‘This is a tram of love and brotherhood, and I think it will take the relationship between both countries a long way. I’m hoping to see the tram host live music too!’ smiled Uthup

Actress and model Ushoshi Sengupta dropped by. ‘I’ve been a part of several events hosted by the former Australian consul-general, Rowan Ainsworth, so I was keen to be a part of this dinner too. I can’t wait to visit Australia now!”

Boylan’s good friend Siriporn Tantipanyathep, the royal consulate-general of Thailand in Kolkata, was there to support him. ‘I invited Hugh to visit the Thai pavilion during the Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF) 2024, which is happening next month,’ she said

The evening saw a display of friendship from all major consulates in the city, with (right) Matsutaro Yamasaki, the deputy consul general of Japan, and (left) US consul general Melinda Pavek converging at The Backyard. Pavek said: ‘The US and Australia have such a tight relationship, both bilaterally, and also as members of the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) with India and Japan. Together, we are a mighty force”

Being a frequent visitor of Australia, Arjuna awardee and former billiards World Champion Sourav Kothari had to be at the dinner. ‘I know Melbourne like the back of my hand since I go there twice every year. Australia has so much to offer, and I love the emphasis it lays on sport. Everyone must visit it,’ he said
