As the winter chill made its way into the city, The Saturday Club made hearts warm by hosting its most prestigious sporting calendar event of the year last month — the 57th Floodlit Tennis Tournament in association with The Telegraph. Held from November 18 to December 2, this weeklong sporting extravaganza witnessed participation from around 600 players across various age groups. The mega tennis tournament that comprised events spread across 17 categories saw tennis players engage in a thorough showcase of their gaming prowess and skills on the club grounds. The finals saw a tough competition and the winners eventually strived forth to walk away with the laurels.

The Floodlit Tennis Tournament was attended by tennis champion Leander Paes and squash pro Ramit Tandon. “Firstly, sitting with Leander and meeting him was a huge fan moment for me. I have been a big fan of his game and he is someone who inspired me when I was growing up. So, it’s amazing that he is here supporting this event. I have been a part and parcel of the club, pretty much since I was born. So, it’s amazing to see this kind of sporting culture in the club.

It’s amazing to interact with someone like Leander. To see the committee promoting sport, especially in Calcutta, is amazing because most other cities have bigger academies that produce a lot of players. But Calcutta is a city where most of the players come out of clubs. These events are therefore equally significant because champions coming out of these events are for the club as well as for Bengal. Hopefully, there will be more medalists emerging in the future,” said Ramit.
