“We started our foundation in 2021 to provide medical support to the interior jungle islands of the Sundarbans. In Kolkata, we try to give skill development to young adults to help them sustain themselves financially in life. ‘Re-Turn’ is an initiative to help reduce textile waste and also give a creative outlet to the children here,” said Chanda

“The children who gave life to ‘Ankur’ were those of my house help. I wanted to help make them more independent. Their mother donated one of the sewing machines that we have here as well to help the cause,” shared Chanda

The exhibition had a number of people browsing through and buying unique creations made from fabric. Some bags are made from denim, while some are old saris that have been donated. The quality of the wide variety of professional-finish products the result of training and help from Chitra Nandan who conducted a 21-day workshop to train the kids

“The creativity has come from the kids, they kept the pockets of the jeans in some bags while braiding the straps out of cloth for some. We were very excited to see the innovative products they created with some guidance from us all,” said Chanda

‘Ankur’ is an educational initiative by Footsteps Foundations to provide additional tuition and help to the 18 children who are in this programme. There are a number of people who volunteer to teach the children as well
