As the weekend approaches after the hectic work days, a big question on our mind is, “What’s the scene?” Lucky for us, every weekend, something or the other always takes place, with national and international artistes touring the country and coming to the city. And who hosts these talented acts in clubs and festivals? The event curators, of course. These people work throughout the year to ensure your weekends are sorted with new and good music and events.

Calcutta Is Dead hosted the first Boiler Room event in Kolkata featuring artiste Cici

Calcutta Is Dead was conceived by Arnold Lee and Priyanka Das in 2022 with a vision to transform the electronic music scene. It curates diverse line-ups that introduce audiences to a wide spectrum of genres and subgenres. Their first event took place on March 19, 2022, and they have since become known for their commitment to musical alignment, rather than genre loyalty. Over the years, prominent names like Amotik, Dax J, Cici Cava, Kilimanjaro, Linear System, and Arjun Vagale have graced their events. While primarily based in Kolkata, the initiative has also expanded to Guwahati. According to Arnold, their goal is to rejuvenate Kolkata’s nightlife, making it a hub for electronic music. A key highlight of their journey was hosting the first-ever Boiler Room and MixMag Lab events in East India, a significant milestone that showcased the genre's potential in Kolkata.

Kliq, by Kunal G, was established about two years ago to create an environment where people can ‘click’ with their cliques. The first event, Kliq Sessions at Farzi Cafe, set the tone for what has become a staple in Kolkata’s nightlife scene. Kliq is distinct for its emphasis on community, curating events where established artistes like Ankytrixx, 16Bit Lolitas, Joseph Disco, Ana Lilia, Diatonik, and Cosmonaut, as well as promising newcomers, can share the stage. Primarily based in Kolkata, Kliq has built a reputation for fostering a safe and inclusive space where electronic music enthusiasts can experience electronic genres. According to Kunal, the goal has always been to nurture a community of like-minded individuals, blending seasoned talent with fresh faces to enrich the city's nightlife and electronic music culture.

Maural Fibre by Adnan launched on April 20, 2023, with a vision to unite lovers of alternative electronic music by providing a common ground for artistes, audiences and venues. From its inaugural event on April 21, 2023, to its most recent on August 25 this year, Maural Fibre has curated and promoted events that celebrate cutting-edge sounds and foster connections within the genres. Notable artistes who have graced its events include 8-Bit Culprit, Arthi, Armen Miran, and Baltra, among others. Although the organisation has not yet travelled to various cities, its impact on Kolkata's nightlife has been profound. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved. A special mention to Miss Ginko, the birthplace of Maural Fibre, for their unwavering love and support, and to our incredible team for working their magic time and time again,” said Adnan.

Reverb, founded by Faheem Rahman, and established in 2013, has been a driving force in Kolkata's EDM scene for over a decade. Its journey began with the inaugural event, Inferno, at Chrome Hotel on September 29, 2013, and continued through to its latest event at Refinery091, on August 30 this year. Conceived to meet the high demand for EDM in Kolkata, Reverb successfully bridged the gap between global trends and local audiences. The organisation has hosted prominent artistes like Polaroit, Jay Sean, Nucleya, Zaeden, and Nikhil Chinapa, and has expanded its reach to both Kolkata and Bangalore.

Nishit Arora, founder of Jamsteady, co-founder of Skinny Mo’s Jazz Club, partner at The Soul Local music festival, and DJ under the alias #SmokeSignal, has been a pivotal figure in the music scene since 2012. Jamsteady, which began its journey on November 21, 2021, with a vision to promote original music, has evolved into a notable platform for gigs in Kolkata, Delhi and Goa, along with music festivals, tours and online content. The unique aspect of Jamsteady is its strong community, built through dedicated support from ticket buyers for each event. The platform has hosted prominent acts like Peter Cat Recording Co., Prateek Kuhad, and Indian Ocean, while also prioritising smaller independent acts. Speaking about Jamsteady Nishit says, “I find joy in the intricate process of organising gigs and contributing to the cultural fabric of the music scene.”
