The Bengali New Year got off to a rollicking start for over 60 doctors as they spent the morning of April 15 letting their hair down, unlike their usually demanding days. They caught up with each other, rejuvenating through song and dance, savouring a delicious breakfast and looking splendid in the six yards of elegance that binds them together.

The Poila Baisakh meet of the Doctors and Sarees Group Kolkata, christened Adya Neelayam or Rise of Positivity, had blue as the theme colour, which stands for optimism and positive energy. All the attending doctors gladly woke up early and reached the venue, The Park, by 9am.

The next three hours went like a breeze with a flurry of activities. It all started with individual and candid shoots by professional photographers against meticulously conceived backgrounds. The fashion walk was next, choreographed by Pinky Kenworthy and executed with elan by doctors in blue saris with matching silver, polki, pearl and stone jewellery. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly when the dance floor was thrown open and everyone shook a leg to their heart’s content to a variety of songs that ranged from Sundari Kamala and Dokhino hawa toGenda phool and latest Oscar-winning sensation Naatu naatu.

Formed in 2019, the main Doctors and Sarees group has 40,000 doctor members worldwide who are passionate about saris. DNS Kolkata, which has over 600 members, is a part of the main group and holds meaningful meets around the year with strong messages on environmental conservation, the cause of unity in diversity and other social issues. A strong impetus of the group is to popularise the sari, especially among GenNext, and lead by example to show that one can do everyday chores, go to work and let their hair down equally gracefully in a sari.
