It was the night before Lohri, and the cold was just seeping in but the heat was high at The Calcutta Swimming Club. We witnessed an energetic bash at Saturday Night feat. DJ Chetas in association with t2 on January 13. While everyone gorged on appetising culinary offerings and drinks, over 500 people waited for DJ Chetas with bated breath. He was welcomed onstage by a cheering crowd that kept screaming the Bollywood DJ’s name until Badle tere maahi... started playing and Chetas opened the show with Phir aur kya chahiye.

What is it about Calcutta that you really like? You perform here very frequently...

I think it is the vibe and the people of Calcutta, they are so sweet! They are very energetic. The show today was very good.

Who is DJ Chetas off the stage?

I am a simple guy who does not talk much, I don’t know why I am talking so much now (laughs).

What kind of music calms you down?

I listen to romantic Bollywood music mixed with EDM.

When you first started looking at the DJ scene, who was your inspiration?

In India, it is DJ Akhil and internationally, DJ Amir for his productions.

When you started out, DJing was not seen as a professional option. So, what made you follow the dream?

I always believed in myself. I always knew that I would do something differently and people would like that. That is exactly what happened when I started putting mashups out there. My first breakthrough was the Breakup Mashup and the Salman Khan Mashup. That changed the game for me because I was the only person doing it back then.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue DJing as a career?

Whatever you do in your life, don’t do it because you want to be famous; do it because it is your passion. The youth right now want to do things because it is on social media. While social media is important, it should not be exploited.

You have a hectic lifestyle. What is the mantra that helps you maintain equilibrium?

Eat healthy, sleep well and spend as much time you can with your family.
