Christmas melodies filled the air around New Market Simpark Mall as little Santas danced to merry tunes on Wednesday afternoon. Students of Calcutta Girls’ High School rang in the festive mood on December 6, with a flashmob.
The area in front of the Simpark Mall in New Market turned into a Christmas party venue as students of classes VI to IX danced to popular Christmas carols like Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree, All I want for Christmas and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.

“This was the first time our school did something of this sort. The students practised very hard for this day along with our dance teacher Priyanka Ghosh. This was a part of our school's Christmas celebrations, which will continue for the rest of this month,” said Angela Gomes, the school’s computer teacher.
Onlookers couldn’t stop recording and clicking pictures as the girls dressed in festive red-and-white shook a leg with the carols.
“The New Market area is usually crowded in December with people visiting for Christmas shopping. Today, there were people around and the weather was also great. It started drizzling but we are sure everyone present today enjoyed the performance by the girls,” added Gomes.

Calcutta Girls’ High School principal Basanti Biswas, school staff, students and parents were all present to witness the flashmob. “I am thankful to everyone present here today. Thanks to the students, parents, teachers and the school management for putting up this wonderful performance. Special thanks to Debasish Kumar, mayoral council member, for all the support. It wouldn’t have been possible without him,” Biswas said.
Debasish Kumar, mayoral council member, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, joined the celebrations and interacted with students. Appreciating their performance, he said, “I am happy to see all of you enjoying the pre-Christmas spirit. Each of you present here today is like a blooming flower. It was a wonderful performance.”
