It was a fun cultural affair at the British Deputy High Commission on Wednesday (March 2). To celebrate St David’s Day, the High Commission hosted a party with a number of guests from across disciplines. Along with film and television personalities, people from business and education sectors were also a part of the celebration.
Talking about the celebration, the acting British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata, Peter Cook, said that it was a very important day for Wales. “All of UK celebrates the day, and Bengalis there are no exception. Today, with technology, when the world has become so much smaller, I feel really great to be a part of this in Kolkata — a city I call home,” Cook added.

Interestingly, Cook, whose father was a minister at St. Andrew’s Church (in BBD Bag), was born in Kolkata and used to stay at Alipore. “I know this city — I know the vibe and the spirit. So, you can imagine my excitement when I am spending this special day here,” Cook added.
The St. David’s Day festivities include wearing daffodils and leek motifs, which are the recognised symbols of Wales and Saint David. Besides, eating traditional Welsh food, including Cawl and Welsh rabbit, is also a part of it. A number of cities and towns across Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea and Aberystwyth have parades throughout the day.

There was a lavish dinner arrangement for the guests and the Deputy High Commissioner played the ideal host. With the dishes like macaroni and cheese, and chicken stew, the spread was completed with English desserts.
