Scientific exhibits from West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Bihar showcased

Describing his model, Mohammad Rahim, from Kabir Memorial Urdu High School, Jamshedpur said, “This is a smart digital dustbin which doesn’t need physical contact. The sensor works when one places his/her palm 30cm above the lid, the dustbin opens automatically. It closes after five seconds. This can be highly useful for hospitals. I completed this project in two days.’’

Haresh Kumar Mahato from the Upgraded high School Madhunia, Bokaro prepared a crutch for the physically challenged. “The bamboo crutch has light and horn sensors. The light helps them when it's dark and the horn signals their presence in the crowd.’’

Class VIII students of Sri Sri Academy, Kolkata presented 'special' terracotta windows. According to Anshika Tibrewal, “The regular wooden window pane is prone to decay and termite attack and hence we tried to replace it with terracotta which is an eco-friendly material, porous, inexpensive and fire resistant. One side of the terracotta panel has been painted black to absorb the heat during the winters while the other side has been laced with aluminium foil to reflect heat during the summers.’’

Phurba Ongdi Bhutia from Denzong Pema Choling Academy, Sikkim showed the way to move towards an eco-friendly environment by making baskets out of discarded plastic. These baskets are sturdy and durable and can last up to six to eight years post which, these can be upcycled again

Falak Sheikh from Sahkari PGH/School Patkhauli Bagahaz, West Champaran, Bihar presented an innovative way of having gol gappas. “This is a ‘Hygiene Gol gappa Pot’. It has a filter pot in the centre with pipes on both sides which can be regulated by keys. These pipes are attached to two more pots. When water is poured into the pot, it gets filtered. The side pots contain sweet and sour water. Consumers can regulate the side tap to add on the sweet/sour flavour to suit their taste.’’

Engineering students from The Neotia University displayed a 3-D printer. Subham Jana said, “With the help of Benbox software, we first zero in on what needs to be printed. We can adjust the size and font. Once fixed, it is printed through the machine.’’
