Akashvani Kolkata's Drama Fest Natyanirjhar focused on issues with a global relevance

Both celebrated artistes of Akashvani Kolkata’s drama department, Mamata Shankar and Paran Bandopadhyay shared the stage for the first time ever as they vocally enacted a play titled Samadhan, composed by Bandopadhyay. Focusing on the often-overlooked social issue of the loneliness of a single mother who is faced with the prospect of her only daughter getting married, the performance was peppered with doses of light humour and drew much appreciation and enthusiastic applause from the audience.

As part of a series of programmes to celebrate India’s G20 presidency, Akashvani Kolkata’s drama section organised a seminar and drama fest Natyanirjhar on August 5 at GD Birla Sabhagar. The programme witnessed a packed auditorium with the audience eager to watch renowned thespians like Paran Bandyopadhyay, Mamata Shankar and Kharaj Mukhopadhyay, among others, showcase their brilliance on stage.

To commence the evening’s programme, Rabindra Bharati University’s vice-chancellor and former Chief Justice of India Subhro Kamal Mukherjee delivered the keynote address by elaborating on the G20 theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ as the idea of a ‘global village’ where all beings on this planet live as a family and thrive through global co-operation. Eminent playwright and economist Ujjwal Chattopadhyay delivered a short lecture on sustainable finance.

The three performances that followed discussed diverse social issues through the medium of audio-play or shruti natak and left the audience spellbound. Winners of inter-college quiz and extempore competitions held as part of a youth connect initiative, were also felicitated as part of the event. Glimpses.
