The Oberoi Grand welcomed the esteemed pianist, Daniele Buccio, who performed all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas over the course of a single evening. Written between 1795 and 1822, these sonatas are some of the most important works of Western classical music.
Buccio, who lives in Verona, Italy, has a PhD in Musicology from the University of Bologna. During his illustrious career, he has taught at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Music in Rome, carried out research at the Musikhochschule Lübeck in Germany, and performed solo since 1997. In 2010, he published the recording Dettagli e ritagli for the Bongiovanni label in Bologna, 69 piano pieces dedicated to him by Italian composer Luigi Verdi.
The Oberoi Grand Kolkata partnered with The Calcutta School of Music to bring Buccio to the city. “The Calcutta School of Music has a matchless reputation for enhancing the city’s cultural repertoire. We were deeply honoured to have collaborated with them for this rare recital of all 32 of Beethoven’s sonatas,” said Natasha Mehta, general manager, The Oberoi Grand Kolkata.
“The Calcutta School of Music is privileged to present an opportunity of a lifetime. Professor Daniele Buccio, visiting us from Italy, has performed all of the 32 Sonatas composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven. For serious music lovers getting to hear all the Sonatas, live, was a very special treat. Over the years, Calcutta has witnessed concerts by Jascha Heifetz, Daniel Barenboim, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Igor Oistrakh and Philharmonic Orchestras under the baton of Zubin Mehta, but eight recitals to cover all 32 Sonatas is a first,” said Jyotishka Dasgupta, president, The Calcutta School of Music.
