In a heart-warming gesture, the students and professors of the Mass communication department of Maharaja Manindra Chandra College donated new clothes and gifted food packets to about 350 people — all workers and family members of the workers of Bamandanga Tea Estate in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri District on October 8. The tea estate has downed its shutters recently.
For the last 13 years, this endeavour is continuing. The students and their professors distributed among the children and women new clothes and refreshments at Bamondanga TG Primary School. Following this, a cultural programme was organised by the students.
Solely arranged by the students and professors of the department and a few professors from the other departments of the college, this social initiative was an attempt to spread the joy of Durga Puja.
The event was solely arranged by the students and professors of the department and professors of the college
Biswajit Das, professor, Journalism and Mass Communication department said, “The tea estate has been shut down ahead of the festival and we wanted to cheer up the workers and their families. Durga Puja is for everyone, so we did whatever little we could. It is delightful to see students involved in this initiative wholeheartedly year-after-year along with their professors. From finances to arrangement and distribution, all were taken care of solely by us.”
From infants to children up to 18 years, all received new clothes while the women were distributed sarees. Thereafter, a grand feast comprising fried rice and chilli chicken was organised. A social worker from the area said, “I was introduced to the college professors through someone and heard about their wonderful initiative and hence I proposed this area since it is in the interiors and unfortunately the tea estate was shut just before the festive season. They agreed and thankfully did an amazing job. You can see the happiness on the faces of the people.”
