If you have stepped out to go clubbing in Kolkata, you may have experienced DJ Jazzleen behind the console at some point of the night – at the official Armin van Bureen afterparty, for example. However, beneath the rhythms and beats lies a deep love for the cultural extravaganza of Durga Puja. My Kolkata explores DJ Jazzleen's unique perspective on Durga Puja, delving deep into her celebrations.

Despite her busy schedule, DJ Jazzleen makes it a point to indulge in the city's most cherished tradition during Durga Puja – pandal hopping. The vibrant pandals and artistic displays hold an irresistible allure. However, for Jazzleen, Puja means more than just that. She values the essence of exploring different places, from restaurants to lounges and cafes, where the festive spirit spills onto the streets. “The main attraction is definitely pandal-hopping, but it goes along with checking out different restaurants, lounges and cafés,” she says.

As a musician, DJ Jazzleen blends tradition with her unique style. While saris and kurta-pajamas are the go-to attire for many during Pujo, Jazzleen’s fashion sense adds a modern twist to her traditional ensemble. Her outfits are a blend of cultural and contemporary fashion, embodying her eclectic personality.

One of DJ Jazzleen's traditions during Durga Puja is her involvement in bringing celebrity artistes to the club where she works, currently at Space Haus. Her Pujo celebrations at Space Haus promise an exciting lineup of events. From Bengali band Fakirs on October 13 to renowned DJ and dancer Rahil Mehta on Saptami, the Pujo preparation and celebrations are on in full swing. Jazzleen herself is set to perform at various venues, including Bling Bling at JW Marriott, Roots, World Bar, Cheap Charlie, and One8 Commune.

When asked to look back at some unforgettable moments, DJ Jazzleen says that they are “vivid and unforgettable”. One cherished memory stands out, where she visited a beautifully decorated pandal with a mesmerising idol. The vibrant colours, the rhythmic beats of the dhaak, and the festive atmosphere left an indelible impression, reaffirming her deep connection to the festival. “My family and I had visited this pandal and the overall festive atmosphere left a lasting impression,” she said.

What about Puja munchies? “The customised Bengali dishes served at different venues are definitely mouth-watering and not to forget the traditional bhog served at the pandals,” she says. She enjoys the mix of khichuri, mixed vegetables, payesh and luchi.
