Music composer duo Salim-Sulaiman has unveiled the ninth song from Bhoomi 2024, the fifth edition of their annual pan-Indian music project. A tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, the song, sung by Shreya Ghoshal and with lyrics by Srijato, has been composed by the duo themselves.
Premiered last week, the song, titled Ujaan, has rapidly climbed up the popularity charts with its lilting melody that appeals straight to the heart. The song, written in Bengali, is a deeply personal composition which captures the essence of Tagore's poetry, though with a contemporary touch.
Composed in a rustic tune that conjures up images of rural Bengal and its unmistakable sweet fragrance, the song is powerful and evocative in tone and content. The beauty of Ujaan lies in its simplicity, which shines through in Shreya Ghoshal's pure and gentle vocal strains. Evoking a deluge of romantic and melancholy emotions, the song presents a beautiful connection between the past and the present, and offers a serene yet soul-stirring experience for listeners.
Earlier, Shreya Ghoshal had shared a post on her Instagram page, announcing the song. "Can’t wait for you to listen to Ujaan. A piece of our hearts releases on the 4th of December... A humble tribute to Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore", read her post.
The video of the song shows the singer traditionally draped in a red sari and wearing antique-styled jewellery delivering a stage performance. Salim (Merchant) on the piano and his brother Sulaiman on talking drums accompany her. The stage decoration and ambience intensify the romantic atmosphere which tugs at the heartstrings. Excerpts from Tagore's poetry recited by Ghoshal in between the stanzas of the song create a dramatic tension that holds together the performance, at the same time adding a deeper, universal and timeless relevance to the song.
Other songs from Bhoomi 2024 that have gained wide traction on social media include 900 Rupiya / Never Let You Go, Jaanaan, Chhaila featuring Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan and Mayavi featuring Sonu Nigam.
