On November 25, Meeta Narain, former head of the Centre of Russian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, celebrated the launch of her latest book, Roerich’s World in Poetry, which was hosted by the Ambuja Neotia Group in association with the consulate general of the Russian Federation in Calcutta, at Gorky Sadan. The book launch was graced by Maxim Kozlov, consul general of the Russian Federation in Calcutta, and Harshavardhan Neotia, chairman, Ambuja Neotia Group, along with other guests and book lovers of the city. The launch was inaugurated by the lighting of a lamp by the special guests, followed by valuable insights from the guests and the author herself. The evening also witnessed a rich spiritual and cultural exchange over a high-tea session.
The book launch marks the celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the revered Russian artist and philosopher, Nicholas K. Roerich. Narain’s work aims to be a comprehensive exploration of Roerich’s life, works, and spiritual journey, with a special focus on his poetry in three languages: the original Russian, and translated English and Hindi. Roerich shared close-knit ties with India himself and also cherished a close friendship with Rabindranath Tagore. Narain’s book includes a vivid range of 25 carefully picked and translated poems from the Russian editions of his works, to introduce and bring Roerich to a wider audience in India. The book not only showcases Roerich’s poetry but also dedicates equal space to his paintings. At the session, Narain explained that the translations were done keeping in mind the original poem’s beauty, creativity, and rhythm.
While reflecting on her journey of writing this book, Narain said: “There are two people who have had an immaculate impact on my life and they are Nicholas Roerich and Rabindranath Tagore. This book is nothing but a reflection of Roerich’s influence on my life. I hope it will introduce readers to the extraordinary life and magnificent work of Roerich. The book is not a matter of one year’s work, it has been on my mind for several years. Translating and bringing out this book has been my endeavour to contribute and carry forward the deep understanding of the intersection of culture and humanity. I hope this book will arouse interest in the readers to read more of Roerich’s works, both in original and translation.”
Harshavardhan Neotia added: “I have a long family connection with Prof. Narain, so I know how she has accomplished and established herself in life. I have immense love towards art and culture, and therefore I am honoured to be a part of this event which celebrates Roerich’s contribution towards art and culture.
