A meeting organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was attended by over 3,000 people in Sakchi on Sunday under strict police vigil.

The meeting, held at the ground in front of the Bodhi temple near Rajendra Vidyalaya, was addressed by VHP international vice-president Jagannath Sahi.

“I ask CAA protesters to pick up a copy of it and let us know if there is anything in it against the Muslims of this country,” Sahi said at the meeting that continued for two hours from 12.30pm.

The VHP leader said the streets were not only meant for those against the CAA.

“We can also hit the streets in support of this law,” he told the gathering.

The VHP had earlier decided to take out a rally from Gandak Road in Sakchi and reach the meeting venue, around 2km away. However, the district administration on Saturday night imposed Section 144 of the CrPC, leading the VHP to cancel the rally.

Dhalbhum sub-divisional officer Chandan Kumar said they had given the VHP permission to hold only a meeting at Bodhi temple ground. “But we later came to know that they were planning to take out a rally,” he said.

About 500 police personnel were deployed at strategic locations in and around the meeting venue.

On Sunday, Union minister of tribal affairs Arjun Munda visited several places in Jugsalai to raise awareness about the CAA .
