Protests in Calcutta intensified over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with demonstrations continuing for more than 20 days. Police blocked several roads on Thursday, including parts of CR Avenue towards Esplanade, leading to significant disruptions for office-goers struggling to return home. Demonstrators, including members of civil society, political parties, and women’s organisations, are united in their demand for justice.
The tragedy, which took place on August 9, has ignited widespread outrage, drawing people from various walks of life into the streets.
An app cab driver said that he had been able to complete only two trips all day due to the severe traffic caused by the protests.
The rallies were marked by slogans and placards calling for stricter measures to ensure the safety of women and a swift investigation into the crime.
The protests showed no signs of abating as anger continues to simmer, with the city witnessing daily demonstrations demanding justice for the victim and accountability from those responsible.
The Congress party, led by state president Adhir Chowdhury, organised a major rally on Thursday, that moved from College Square towards Shyambazar, close to the site of the incident.
Among the demonstrators were supporters of football clubs Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan Sporting Club, who joined the protest rally, demanding justice for the victim and calling for stronger safety measures for women.
