As protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) continue in the capital, two organisations have jointly planned a daylong seminar on Monday “to facilitate in-depth understanding of the situation”.

Jharkhand Nagrik Prayas, which describes itself as “a group of concerned citizens”, has teamed up with National Alliance of People’s Movement to organise the seminar at Social Development Centre on Purulia Road on Monday .

The seminar will have two sessions. While the first session will discuss the CAA and the NRC, the second will be devoted to deliberations on Article 370 and Kashmir.

The speakers at the seminar will include well-known civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad, renowned economist-activist Jean Drèze and former IAS officer S. Sasikanth Senthil, who recently resigned from the post of deputy commissioner of South Kannada district in Karnataka.

“We are a secular, democratic republic committed to equality, dignity, justice and fraternity for all. A series of steps by the Centre has blatantly violated these principles,” Jharkhand Nagrik Prayas convener P.P. Verma said, explaining why they thought of organising the seminar.

In a note addressed to the media, the organisers said: “Mob lynching, love jihad related violence, blatant coercive action against minority institutions, demonising intellectuals and premier institutions have been a few symptoms of nefarious intent of Hindutwa forces, which shattered the faith of over a billion poor, harmony-loving common Indians in the institution of democracy.”

It states that the trust deficit of the citizens is at an all-time low. “Over seven million Kashmiris have been virtually locked up in their houses for over five months without livelihood, healthcare, education and communication,” the note said, justifying the need for a dialogue.

On Saturday, a protest meeting against the citizenship law was held at Bariatu Pahari Maidan. Another protest meeting will be held at Urs Maidan in Doranda on Sunday. It will be addressed by leaders of all major political parties, barring the BJP, and students and alumni of JNU and AMU.
