A home-guard jawan who was allegedly caught on camera accepting a bribe from a coal smuggler one-and-half years ago was dismissed from service on Friday after a Twitter user uploaded the video and tagged chief minister Hemant Soren’s account.
Twitter user Dhananjay Mandal, whose handle is @dhananjaynews and whose Twitter bio says he is a “journalist and passionate Indian citizen”, tagged Hemant’s account, @HemantSorenJMM, at 9.16am on Friday. Ten minutes later, the CM tweeted: “@dc_dhanbad. @dhanbadpolice corruption, illegal mining won’t be tolerated at any cost. Please ensure that adequate action is taken to curb these practises.”
The district administration swung into action and probed the video, which showed a home-guard jawan taking money from a coal smuggler near Jorapokhar police station. The jawan was immediately removed from the job.
Mandal’s tweet, in Hindi, had said that the jawan in the video was a bodyguard of an inspector of Jorapokhar police station.
“We had taken the issue very seriously,” Dhanbad deputy collector (DC) Amit Kumar told The Telegraph on Friday. “A probe was conducted by a team jointly led by ADM (law and order) Anil Kumar and DSP (law and order) Mukesh Kumar during which the video was found true although it was an 18-month-old video.”
Sources said the sacked jawan was the driver of a police officer.
“We have taken strict action based on the findings of the probe and immediately suspended the home-guard jawan, Bhagwan Singh, who was taking bribe from a coal smuggler,” the DC said. “The administration is very serious about combating illegal mining and a meeting of the district-level task force headed by me was held recently during which instructions were given to take the issue of illegal mining very seriously and continue raids relentlessly across the district.”
He furnished data on action taken on the initiative of the district-level task force on illegal mining and coal smuggling, and said that 134 FIRs have been registered during the current financial year and 84 arrests have been made.
“The district police has also confiscated 176 trucks carrying smuggled coal and also seized 121 other vehicles, including tipper trucks and two-wheelers,” the DC said.
The chief minister on Friday also took note of a tweet that the JMM’s Koderma unit had tagged him in, pointing out a high tension electric cable of Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited hanging at a low height in Pipradih area of Koderma district for days leading to incidents of electrocution, and instructed Koderma DC Gholap Ramesh Gorakh to conduct a probe and ensure strict action against those responsible.
