A 75-year-old morning walker was run over by a mini-truck on Kadma-Bhatia Bustee road on Sunday, triggering a two-hour blockade that threw traffic out of gear.

The protesters, 250 in number, not only demanded compensation for deceased Vijayanat Lohar’s bereaved family, but also imposition of speed limit on the artery.

The mishap took place in front of Kerala Public School, around 700 metres from the toll bridge, around 6am. Traffic movement between Kadma and Adityapur toll bridge, a distance of around 1,500 metres, was disrupted from 6.30am to 8.30am as the residents of Ramjanam Nagar blocked the road.

Lohar, a resident of Ramjanam Nagar, was hit by a Tata 407 coming from Marine Drive. The driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle behind.

Residents of the locality, who rushed to the spot, tried to set the truck on fire but were prevented by police.

Kadma thana OC J.K. Thakur said, “Lohar was probably out for her morning walk when she was hit by the speeding mini-truck. The driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle behind, which we have seized,” said Thakur.

OC Thakur said the residents were demanding Rs 5 lakh compensation for the victim’s kin. They later lifted the blockade after the local administration paid Rs 10,000 to the victim’s kin for her last rites and promised to look into the demand.

The blockade affected commuters as they had to take a detour from Marine Drive to reach Kadma.

“We set up the blockade not only for compensation, but also for the safety of residents. While walking on this road, we have to be extra alert because vehicles, especially trucks and commercial vehicles, ply at breakneck speed. The administration should introduce a speed limit,” said Jagdish Sharma who participated in the protest.
