The state’s first automated bicycle sharing system introduced in Jamshedpur last month has been an instant hit with picnickers at the scenic Jubilee Park.

“We are witnessing nearly 60 rides on an average daily since the launch of the app-based system on December 21 inside Jubilee Park, which has been brimming with picnickers since Christmas. Nearly 40 new registrations are taking place every day at the two cycle docking stations,” said Abhishek Dubey, Jusco deputy manager (Jamshedpur town operation), who is looking after the project.

There are two docking stations at the park — one near the district collectorate end and the other near the Centre For Excellence.

Another docking station operates from Tata zoo.

As part of the pilot project, 34 bicycles have been deployed at the docking stations.

Users have to log on to `www.tilt.bike/app` and register themselves. At the docking station, users can either scan the QR code to unlock a cycle or use a Tilt smart card.

One has to pay Rs 15 for an hour’s ride, Rs 10 for 30 minutes and Rs 5 for a 15-minute ride.

The cycles will be tracked through a GPS-enabled system.

“It has been years since I have bicycled owing to the paucity of time. When I came to Jubilee Park for picnic, I could not resist the urge to cycle, which is one of the best method to keep fit and healthy. I have registered myself and will be coming here at least once a week for cycling,” Telco resident Simran Dey (22), who is pursuing post-graduation in commerce, said.

Some students are registering for cycling after college hours.

“I have been cycling here for the last four days. It is quite refreshing and reminds me of my childhood days. I come from my college to the park on my bike, park it near the gate and cycle,” said Rahul Yadav (19), a resident of Mango and an intermediate student of Karim City College.

The initiative has found favour with middle-aged persons as well.

“It is a welcome break. I had come for a picnic with my family at the park and decided to register myself. Cycling is not only an environment-friendly mode of transport but also helps to burn calories. I have now decided to do it more frequently,” said Dhiraj Singh (49), a Tata Steel employee and a resident of Kasidih.

Jusco, which rolled out the project in association with Tilt (a start-up) and Tata International, is planning similar ventures in other green lungs.

“There has been tremendous response to the cycle sharing system and we plan to roll it out at other parks maintained by us to generate awareness on eco-friendly and healthy mode of transport,” Jusco spokesperson Rajesh Rajan said.

Significantly, Jusco maintains parks in Golmuri, Agrico, Sitaramdera, Kadma, Bhuiyandih, Sonari, Nildih, Baridih, Namda Basti and Burmamines.
