Paralympian Prashant Sinha, a 35-year-old steel city resident suffering from cerebral palsy, wants to set an example at the Tata Steel Noamundi Run-a-thon on Sunday.

“I am heading to Noamundi in West Singhbhum district on Saturday. I know it’s difficult to run 10km, but I want to set an example and there is no harm in trying,” Prashant, who has played 22 national championships as a shuttler, said on Friday.

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects one’s movement, motor skills and muscle tone from birth.

Sinha said he was prepared for the run and was trying hard to build stamina and endurance. “I try to run 10 km in the mornings. I have set a target to complete the distance in 45 minutes but am taking 1.10 hours. After all, I am a shuttler and not a regular runner although I have earlier taken part in marathons organised by Tata Steel,” he added.

“I want to show that there is nothing called disability. I came to know about the run-a-thon last year and decided to take part in the open category even though there is a special group for persons with disabilities,” the paralympian added.

Meandering through the heart of Tata Steel township, the second edition of the run-a-thon will kick-off from Noamundi Sports Complex at 6.30am. This year, the run is being organised as a medium to spread awareness on biodiversity. The run draws its sub-theme from the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) initiative of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2030 agenda for SDG’s represent the world’s plan of action for social inclusion, environmental sustainability and economic development.

There will be different events for various categories of runners. Apart from the 10km run for elite runners (open to all), there will be a 7km run for men and women, a 5km run for boys and girls (under the age of 16 years) and a 2km run for persons with disabilities.
