Over 3 lakh people residing in non-Tata command areas and served by Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam (JBVNL) can expect relief from frequent power cuts, breakdowns and problem of low voltage by April next year.

JBVNL, the supply wing of power conglomerate Jharkhand Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (JUVNL), is coming up with new power substations at various locations serviced by it, including Mango, Jugsalai, Sonari, Kadma and Sundernagar, on the outskirts of the city.

This will not only improve power supply but would also reduce outages, voltage fluctuations and help in quick detection and repairing of faults.

General manager of JBVNL’s Singhbhum electricity supply area Arvind Kumar said about a dozen substations were being constructed under the Centre’s Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP)-Part II.

“Besides the Centre-sponsored scheme, we have identified several places for construction of substations with JBVNL funds,” Kumar told The Telegraph, adding that the substations were likely to be built by April next year.

Outlining the advantages of the substations which will be of 10MVA capacity, Kumar said, “The substations, under construction in several places in Mango, will reduce the length of feeders, thereby reducing line loss. It will also help to ensure steady supply to our consu-mers without any fluctuations. Frequent power cuts will become a thing of the past,” he said.

JBVNL junior engineer Sanjay Kumar Mahato, who looks after Mango locality, said the presence of adequate number of power stations less than 15km away from each other would help solve supply issues by improving the distribution system.

“As many as four new substations are being constructed in Mango. Once operational, they will ensure uninterrupted power supply to the entire Mango locality, which has around 2.5 lakh JBVNL consumers,” he said.

The substations are coming up at Jawaharnagar, Baliguma (near the new power grid), Turiabera and Banki.

Chandra Shekhar, a JBVNL official and an expert in power-related matters, said the substations would help solve power cuts owing to overloading and cable bursts.
