A speeding biker killed an eldery washerman on Main Road here under Chutia police station on Friday morning, the second major accident after a young man’s car killed two men and injured seven others in the small hours of Wednesday.

Asgar Ali, 60, was hit by the bike on Main Road near Pradhan Tower around 10am.

Biker Abhay Kumar, 40, was on his way to Albert Ekka Chowk from the overbridge. Ali had been crossing the road through a cut in the road divider when Abhay’s bike hit him. “The speeding bike gained momentum in the slope of the overbridge in front of Pradhan Tower,” said an eye-witness.

Passers-by rushed towards Ali, a resident of Doranda, who was slumped on the road, to Sadar hospital, some 2km from the spot, but doctors declared Ali brought dead.

Chutia police have detained Abhay and seized the bike, Chutia OC Ravi Thakur told The Telegraph. “We are probing whose fault it was.”

It was the second major accident under Chutia police station area in a short interval. On January 1, around 2am, two young catering employees died and seven more sustained injuries after 21-year-old Jatin Bedi rammed into them with his car near Patel Chowk.

Bedi, son of a prominent garments businessman of the capital and home from his college in Bangalore, was coming from a party. He was said to be driving recklessly while drunk. Police, however, later said Bedi was not drunk. His family paid Rs 1.5 lakh in cash to the kin of the two deceased labourers and promised to bear the medical costs of the injured. A Ranchi court granted Bedi bail.

A resident of Harmu, Prabhakar, who on Thursday went to visit a mishap victim at Gurunanak Hospital, rued the spurt in rash driving. “My neighbour Rajnish Sinha sustained head injuries at Airport Road around 12.30pm on Thursday when a vehicle, not identified so far, hit his scooter. Thank god someone dialled 100 and he was rescued. But rash driving has increased in the city. Police need to punish those flouting road rules more strictly,” he said.
