Monika Mahto, a special athlete who was under treatment for severe jaundice, was discharged from Tata Main Hospital on Thursday evening.

The 27-year-old has recovered from the ailment but doctors have asked her to take complete bed rest for three months. She is at her home in Tinplate locality of the steel city.

"Bhagwan ki kripa and logo ki dua se meri beti wapas ghar aa gayi. Bahut khush hu (By the grace of Almighty and good wishes from people, my daughter has returned home)," said Monika's mother Lakshmi, a homemaker.

Satbir Singh Sahota, assistant area director of Special Olympics Jharkhand (SOJ), who visited Monika's home on Friday evening, said the intellectually challenged athlete has recovered from jaundice and is taking bed rest. "Her (Monika) family has decided to not send her to her in-laws home in Giridih. She will rest in Jamshedpur for 6 months. She has become very weak," he added.

According to Sahota, an ex-international cyclist, around Rs 3 lakh was spent towards Monika's treatment in hospital. "I have asked Monika's family to provide us hospital bills and related papers, which will be routed to Special Olympics Bharat for financial help. We have already informed the national organisation about the economic condition of Monika and requested financial assistance for the family," he added.

Monika was admitted to the hospital for severe jaundice on January 16. Jaundice had affected her kidneys and other organs. She was also on a ventilator for two days at the High Dependency Unit of the hospital. Monika claimed a gold (singles) and a silver (doubles) in badminton for the country at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.

Monika, who has suffered from mental retardation since childhood, was married in February last year. Her husband is from Giridih. The special athlete conceived but unfortunately had a miscarriage. She suffered from jaundice during pregnancy and was shifted to Jamshedpur in an ambulance last month. Some of the hospitals in Jamshedpur refused to admit her. Finally, Monika was admitted to Tata Main Hospital.
