An effort that should be lauded to the hilt, a team of four students of 3rd Year B Tech of IIT (ISM), titled Urjaffinity has secured the top spot at the International Switch Energy Case Competition. Organised by Switch Energy Alliance, the theme of the meet was on a proposal to lend a solution to economic challenges emanating from energy poverty based. The team comprising two students from the Department of Applied Geophysics, Anurag Bhattacharya and Ayush Kumar Jha besides Apurva Shandilya and Umang Tulsan from the Petroleum Engineering, made a 10-minute video presentation underlining their ideas.

The team which also bagged a cash prize of $ 10000, is now eligible for internship with Switch Energy Alliance.

Talking to The Telegraph Online today, Anurag said, “We proposed a solution to the present energy scenario of Nepal which has faced an energy crisis for decades due to geographical and geopolitical constraints as well as its dependence on energy imports and inadequate exploitation of vast amounts of renewable energy resources”. Biomass, including wood, agriculture residues and dung are primary sources of fuel in Nepal and due to its increased usage, a large number of people face cardiovascular diseases in the country.” And Anurag added that they proposed Solar Pump Hydropower Plant as part of their ideas which can help overcome dependence on BioMass and Hydroelectricity as energy sources.

“The solar pump hydropower plant will also help do away with dam constructions meant for construction of conventional hydroelectric plants” said Bhattacharya and added the competition began with team registration from September 1 in which more than 900 students from 39 countries with the help of over 100 energy professionals who volunteered as mentors and judges participated. “Our solution meant for a future period of 30 years entailed a cost of $ 370 million but as per the current pattern of energy consumption, the cost for energy requirements for 30 years is $ 3.7 billion. Thus our solution is more than 90% cheaper as well as environment friendly as it does not require construction of dams” elaborated Bhattacharya.
