Jharkhand government arranged for shifting of Mohammed Nadim Alam, 24, a victim of the June 10 violence in Ranchi, for better treatment at Medanta Multi Superspeciality Hospital in Delhi.
Nadim was undergoing treatment at the critical care unit of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi. However, as his condition did not improve even after 10 days, a medical board decided to refer him to Delhi for better treatment.
“He was admitted in the critical care unit of the hospital. We had taken out the bullet which was stuck in the neck region. But the condition did not improve and he was on a ventilator. A seven-member board decided to refer the patient to a higher centre. We had recommended his treatment in AIIMS Delhi. However, AIIMS does not take such patients from outside on ventilators. Thereafter we informed the Ranchi district administration which after consultation decided to admit the patient at Medanta Hospital,” said RIMS superintendent H. Birua.
Nadim was taken in an air ambulance arranged by the state government on Friday morning around 10am and landed in Delhi at 1pm.
Nadim was among those who had sustained bullet injury allegedly in police firing during a protest on Ranchi Main Road on June 10, demanding the arrest of now-axed BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal for making derogatory comments on Prophet Mohammed. Two persons, including a teenager, were killed in the violence.
“We have got our brother admitted to Medanta. A bullet was stuck in the left side of his neck and it was taken out by the doctors at RIMS. But there was a blood clot in the brain which made him unconscious. We had also appealed to the doctors to refer him to a hospital with better treatment facility,” said Nadim’s elder brother Mohammed Tipu Sultan.
The state government has decided to bear the entire medical expense incurred on Nadim’s treatment.
“He was the only earning member of his family. He used to have a meagre income by repairing high-mast lights, while I work as a plumber. We don't have money for such treatment,” said 29-year-old Tipu.
Sources in the administration informed that the air ambulance expense was nearly Rs 7.5 lakh, while hospital authorities had been paid Rs 2.45 lakh.
