Police in Ranchi are being pilloried by none other BJP leaders and functionaries, prompted by Monday night’s incident when an MP’s car was pelted with stones on the outskirts of the capital, exposing a security lapse that could have had serious consequences.

While the BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Samir Oraon questioned the efficacy of Ranchi police, on Tuesday, a BJP leader led 100 supporters to Jagannathpur police station to raise a hue and cry about his missing car.

Oraon’s car was attacked at Gargaon, 30km from the city under Itki police station area, when he was returning from Lohardaga.

“It is a matter of concern that police officials are not paying attention to security of commuters. I came to know that before pelting stones on my vehicle, the same people had targeted many other vehicles at the same place,” Oraon told The Telegraph.

“The matter was in the knowledge of police but they did not act properly. They waited till I was targeted,” Oraon said angrily.

SP (rural) Ashutosh Shekhar said the MP’s complain was being looked into. “Some suspects have been detained. We expect an early breakthrough in the incident of stone pelting,” Shekhar said.

On Tuesday, district president of BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha Krihnakant Ram, accompanied by around 100 party men, held a dharna at Jagannathpur police station near the state Assembly, expressing his unhappiness at the police’s failure to have his stolen vehicle returned to him after it had been traced to Bihar.

Ram said he has been doing the rounds of the police for a year now.

“My vehicle was stolen from my house at New Colony in Jagannathpur in April 2018. Police could not trace it. In August, I used my own sources and traced my stolen vehicle to Pawapuri police station in Nalanda district of Bihar. I immediately informed officer-in-charge Anup Karmakar. But so far, he has not been able to get me my vehicle,” Ram said.
