Mango and Jugsalai, both areas serviced by Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited ( JBVNL), reeled from an acute power crisis on Tuesday.

More than 1 lakh residents did not have electricity supply from early morning in Mango, and in Jugsalai more than 25,000 residents faced a power ordeal due technical snags.

Power was snapped from two feeders in Mango because of installation of a new transformer on National Highway-33, resulting in outage from 8am. Residents of Dimna Road, Post Office Road, Teachers' Colony, Ulidih, Moon City and several other localities in Mango complained about the prolonged power cut.

“The power cut was intermittent initially from 8am. After 10am there was no power in our locality. When contacted, JBVNL officials said that normal power would be restored late in the evening,” said K.N. Singh, a resident of Dimna Road in Mango.

Anirban Chatterjee, a resident of Teachers’ Colony, said even the inverter at his home gave up due to the prolonged power outage.

“Our house has plunged into darkness. Now we are waiting for the power supply to resume, only then the inverter will get recharged,” said a peeved Chatterjee. The misery was compounded for Jugsalai, because the locality has been already facing a power crisis for the last few days. Simultaneous technical snags in overhead power supply lines of JBVNL resulted in the crisis.

“The power crisis has resulted in water scarcity. We could not operate the pump to draw water to the overhead tanks as the power supply was very erratic,” said Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Naya Bazar Road in Jugsalai.

He said they were not getting even 10 minutes of steady power supply. When the power does come back, the voltage fluctuations put household appliances at risk.

Contacted, Sanjay Mahto, junior engineer with the JBVNL, said there were no supply restrictions from the state load despatch centre.

“The power crisis in Jugsalai was due to technical snags while in Mango the supply was affected due to installation of a new transformer on the main line. The power supply in Mango was also affected due to installation of four electricity poles,” said Mahto.

He added that efforts were being made to restore normal supply by late evening.
